No trip to the "City of Gods" is complete without a special outing devoted to its culinary culture. Join a guided walking food tour on Day 2 — this half-day outing lets you visit some of the best markets and sample classic fare. Begin at a local hangout with a cup of rich Greek coffee, then transfer to the central market of Varvakios, home of wall-to-wall stalls of the vegetables, fruit and meat that are central to a Mediterranean diet. Sample local olive oil, olives, cheeses and rusks. At an out-of-the-way family-run shop, try nuts, figs, olives and dates. The regional treats of a traditional meze platter as well as an aperitif of ouzo or raki are waiting at your next stop. Round out your excursion with something for your sweet tooth — loukoumades.

Your “Taste of Athens” tour ends at Monastirak square in the city center, leaving you in the perfect spot to explore at your own pace. Don’t miss your chance to shop at the Monastirak flea market, see Hadrian’s Library or get refreshed with a drink at any taverna. Or, you could venture to 5th-century Acropolis, the Parthenon or the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. With plenty of time to explore, the choice is up to you!

While at the hotel, use your 20% discount on paid spa services to treat yourself to a relaxing or rejuvenating treatment. (Please note: You must book your spa services at least 10 days prior to travel. Contact the hotel at 210 7416000 to book directly.)

What we love:
• Purported to have health benefits, the Mediterranean diet comprises mainly vegetables, fruit, whole grains and many splashes of olive oil.
• Mt. Lycabettus, the highest point in Athens, is located directly across the street from your hotel and offers incomparable views of the city.
• Reminiscent of doughnuts, loukoumades are typically dipped in honey or chocolate, or sprinkled with cinnamon.
• Athens was named after the goddess of wisdom and courage, Athena. It’s the birthplace of Plato and, in the past, children were expected to learn to play the lyre and study the works of Homer.
